Obverse: N E
Reverse: XII
Weight: 138.3 g (8.96grams) Diameter: 31.3 mm
Comments: This is a modern reproduction of an NE shilling madeby the Boston Mint of Cambridge, Massachusetts. This lead based reproductionis slightly larger and heavier than the silver originals (originals weightabout 72 grains or 4.66 grams and measure within 25-28mm). The pronouncedplanchet striations seen on this copy are not found on the originals. Theobverse of the reproduction has a similar style of lettering to the originalbut with slightly thicker lines. There are 16 surviving NE shillings madewith three different sets of punches. This reproduction appears to be closerto Noe’s punch 3 (he called it die 3), illustrated as Noe 10. The cutting(or turning) mark seen on the left half of the obverse does not appear onany original. The reverse has thicker numerals and lacks the serifs foundon the original. Clearly, the word ’COPY’ on this reproduction is notfound on the originals.
